BiographyAbout Margaret
Margaret Griffin is a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist with 16 years of experience working in a variety of environments including mental health, sexual behavior treatment, and private practice. She specializes in working with adults, adolescents, and couples struggling with issues including depression, anxiety, relationship problems, and life transitions. Margaret views the difficulties clients are dealing with as a natural part of the human experience; part of the ebb and flow of human life. Her warm and non-judgmental presence allow her clients to feel a sense of safety and ease in engaging in therapeutic work. Margaret’s basic orientation to the therapeutic process is psychodynamic, however, cognitive-behavioral and dialectical-behavior therapies form the core of many of her interventions. Margaret offers targeted DBT individual sessions for those struggling with emotion regulation, distress tolerance and those in need of concrete coping skills. Margaret also has specialized training in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing), a powerful healing approach to the treatment of traumas both large and small. Frequently, past traumas are at the root of present struggles, and by addressing them with targeted trauma treatment, current difficulties may be resolved. Margaret views each client as the expert and authority on themselves. She sees her role as partnering with her clients to resolve obstacles to emotional growth and attainment of personal goals, develop skills and capacities to move toward self-actualization, and create inner resources to buttress the stress of coping with busy lives. She assists clients in developing their awareness of the human systems they are a part of, including their socially ascribed roles of race, class, gender, and sexuality, and how these standpoints affect their personal, professional, and social experiences. Margaret earned her Masters in Social Work (MSW) from SUNY Albany where she graduated with honors. Margaret is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the State of New York.
