Marni L. LoIacono Merves, LCSW, MA, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and psychotherapist who works with children, adolescents, adults, couples and families. Coming from a strengths-based perspective, and focusing on meeting the client’s own needs, Marni integrates a variety of treatment modalities and techniques including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), psychodynamic, relational, solution-focused, trauma-focused and more, to best suit each individual or family system. Marni often implements skills into her work in areas involving communication, social skills, bullying/peer relationship difficulties, problem solving, conflict resolution, time management, goal setting and planning, and developing healthy coping skills. Some of Marni’s experience include treating individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, Bipolar Disorder, substance abuse disorders, ADHD/behavioral issues, academic underachievement, learning disabilities, LGBTQ/gender identity and questioning; self-injurious behaviors, body image and disordered eating, anger management and impulse control; autism spectrum disorders and other special needs; hard to engage and resistant youth; low self-esteem, PTSD, trauma and loss. Additionally, Marni has extensive experience treating couples and families dealing with marital, relationship and divorce issues, changes in family dynamics and/or family conflict; parenting/adjusting to life after a birth; sexual and reproductive health issues; adoption; blended families and interpersonal relationships. Marni has experience in academic research, higher education, clinical, and community settings throughout Westchester and NYC. She has worked with adolescents and emerging adults in a variety of these settings for over 20 years. She is passionate about working with youth both individually and in groups. She has special expertise in developing, implementing and evaluating programs for adolescents in mental health, sexual and reproductive health, and youth development; working with and training other professionals and communities in advancing youth development; designing, facilitating trainings, and engaging groups in discussions around diversity and inclusion. She is comfortable discussing difficult topics and believes that there is nothing someone should feel they can’t ask openly, honestly, and without judgment. Marni received her BS in Psychology from Union College, her MA in Psychology (Clinical Track) from The New School for Social Research, and her MSW from Hunter College School of Social Work, holding a Practice Specialization in Children, Youth and Families. Marni also holds a double minor in Theater and Visual Arts, and often incorporates her passion for drama and art into her work-both individually and in groups. Clients have described Marni to be warm, nonjudgmental, professional, energetic, goes “above and beyond”, kind and knowledgeable. Marni prides herself on her ability to form relationships with adolescents and adults of all personalities and thus has worked successfully with clients from all ages and backgrounds. Marni’s core belief is that the most important factor responsible for client change, lies in the strength of the relationship between client and therapist.
